May 5, 2026:

Hwy. 63 Bridge Replacement:

Later today or tomorrow morning, excavation work for the north bridge abutment will commence. Wednesday of this week will also see the arrival of more large equipment--including the crane that will be used to begin driving pilings Thursday afternoon or Friday morning. Some short-term louder noise is coming! They should be ready to pour the north bridge abutment beginning around the middle of next week. One last note--the DOT continues to be open to our suggestions for additional signage, so hopefully we can ebb some unnecessary traffic on local roads!

Hwy 63 Resurfacing Charrie Lane to Washburn County line:

Mill and overlay works is ready to commence. A small technical flaw was found during the test strip paving last week, however, and the contractor is working on a fix with the DOT. A new test strip will be done Friday of this week, and if all goes well, it will be full speed ahead next Monday. The current plan is still to work southward from Barronett to Cumberland, and then turn around and work northward.

Hwy. 63 Bridge Replacement:

After initial traffic and erosion control setup, demolition on the old bridge is well underway as of today. Construction of the temporary channel for canoe and kayak traffic will be imminent, along with some early riprap and storm sewer work. Current plans call for the new northern bridge abutment to be placed late next week or early the following week. Thereafter the removal of the old culvert will take place and work will continue southward through the channel. If you have major safety concerns related to the construction or detouring traffic, please email [email protected].

Hwy 63 Resurfacing Charrie Lane to Washburn County line:

The project started with concrete work in Barronett. When resurfacing does begin, current plans (subject to change) are to work southward from Barronett to Charrie Lane, and then go back northward. Work will be done in reasonably short segments, with one lane always open under flaggers in the immediate work zone.

Local Road Improvements:

The City of Cumberland is meeting with potential contractors this week to begin finalizing plans for other local road work. Details will begin emerging in the coming weeks.

Hwy. 63 Bridge Replacement:

There was an unfortunate last-minute delay to the project start date that was unceremoniously sprung on us this week that pushed commencement to Friday April 24th. As of this morning, that date is apparently locked in. Traffic and erosion control, along with equipment staging will be the primary initial focus--but they'll get to work as expeditiously as possible. There was one final surge in the DNR/DOT tug-of-war today that yielded good news--the dredging material that will be removed will not be classified as contaminated which will make the handling quicker and more efficient. Also, in order to expedite the project as much as possible, we have authorized the contractors to work from 6am to 9pm Monday thru Friday (with no exceptionally loud work before 7am nor after 8pm). Buckle up--it's about to get real!

Hwy. 63 Bridge Replacement:

It appears the DNR and DOT have come to agreement on their outstanding issues. The project is now green-lighted with a start date of Wednesday April 22nd. That will be the date the highway is closed and the need for detouring begins. There will be a temporary pedestrian lane across the Lake Street bridge throughout the project until the new bridge is opened.

Local Road Improvements:

There are a number of local roads that will receive resurfacing treatments this summer. At this time, this work looks like it will commence in late-June to early-July. More details will be forthcoming in the near future.

DOT Public Information Meeting:

This meeting will cover both the Hwy 63 Resurfacing and Bridge Replacement projects. It will be Monday April 13, 2026 beginning at 4:30pm at Cumberland City Hall. This meeting is intended for local residents and business owners. Bring your questions!

Hwy 63 Resurfacing Charrie Lane to Washburn County line:

The DOT will be continuing resurfacing of Hwy. 63 from Charrie Lane northward to the Washburn County line. This project start date was pushed back to April 20, 2026, but with no real impact to Cumberland-proper for a couple more weeks. This entire project is scheduled for completion by June 15th. One lane of traffic will always be open under flaggers. Impacts in the City of Cumberland will be minimal.

Hwy. 63 Bridge Replacement:

We now know that this project will not commence before April 20th, but that is not the start date for certain. The DOT and DNR are still working out some details. The details of this project evolve constantly. We'll know more after next week's Public Information Meeting.

Hwy. 63 Bridge Replacement:

The DOT contractor has indicated a tentative start date of April 13th. Last week, however, the DNR threw a last-minute curveball at the project that could result in a modest delay. The extent of the delay is being evaluated and we'll know more soon. Everyone is committed to delaying the closing of the bridge until work can fully commence so that the closure isn't extended. When the closure does occur, it will be a complete closure for 84-87 days.
